What is Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)?

As a definition of CPR, we can say that CPR is an emergency procedure to reactivate the working of heart and lungs to continue regular blood flow to the brain. This process is done by compressing on the chest of the person, who is breathing abnormally and in the unconscious condition.

What are the CPR Procedure or CPR steps?

First of all, make sure that you are going to take all responsibility for that man or woman patient. You should understand how the patient is breathing, if the patient is unconscious and breathing abnormally then you should contact a specialist doctor. Before the doctor is coming that’s the time to start Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

  1. Before start CPR, you have to open the mouth of the patient to open the airway.
  2.  Start chest compression on the patient, put the heel of your hand in the center of the chest and cover the hand with your other hand and interlock the fingers. Like Pic 1.
  3. For an adult, the patient pushes down 4 to 5 cm and for kids, it should be 2 cm. The rate for chest compression should be 100 to 120 times per minutes.
  4. After each compression release, the pressure to normal but don’t change the position of your hand.
  5. If you know how to do rescue breath or you are trained then do it after 20 to 30 chest compressions. Rescue breath is performed by delivering breath through your mouth to the patient’s mouth to rise and fall the chest. Don’t deliver too much breath, it causes air to the stomach and the patient going to vomit.
  6. If you are not trained or uncomfortable to do it then continue the chest compression until the patient’s normal breath or until you take over to the doctor.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Purpose:

CPR is not a permanent solution for any person's physical condition. CPR is just an emergency procedure to activate the working of the heart and lungs to deliver the oxygenated blood to the brain and the whole body to save that person for better treatment. So the main purpose of CPR is to continue the blood flow from the heart to the brain. Because after cardiac arrest the brain damage may occur.

CPR Guidelines:

  • Don't forget to open the airways before CPR.
  • For an adult, the patient pushes down 4 to 5 cm and for kids, it should be 2 cm.
  • The rate for chest compression should not be 120 times per minutes.
  • There are various rules according to the countries but these three rules are common.
